Autumn Art Story

Autumn is a wonderful season to celebrate in different art projects. It is a time to cherish the earth’s last beautiful display for the year. Henry David Thoreau said, “I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, then be crowded on a velvet cushion”.

The Autumn project focused on developing children’s observational drawing skills which implies drawing from life. Searching for shadows and shading was our key point in the drawing process. During this time, we also explored the form and shape through the pumpkin creations. Children were developing their self-expression by designing and making the Autumn Bouquets. Some of the classes had a chance to participate in a nature walk. The nature walk was a great opportunity to collect all the nature materials for our projects and appreciate the outside Autumn charm using senses of touch, sight, hearing and smell.

Year 5 classes were involved in a slightly different task. They were drawing and painting their own Polka dot Pumpkins in the style of Yayoi Kusama artwork. He is a contemporary Japanese artist who is sometimes called 'the princess of polka dots'. She works across painting, sculpture, film, and installation.

It was wonderful to observe children’s engagement, creativity and calmness in the making process. I am sure it was a great wellbeing moment for them.
