Curriculum

Year 1 at Park Lane International School


Children aged 5-6

Numeracy
Park Lane International School implements the National Numeracy Strategy. The children are involved in a daily Numeracy lesson, which includes mental maths activities and math games to go along with the topics covered. Children study a range of topics including: numbers, shapes, measures, data handling and problem solving.

Science
Students in Year 1 at Park Lane learn six different science topics over the course of the year. Teachers will guide our pupils in exciting hands-on learning activities through topics such as ourselves, light and dark, pushes and pulls, growing pains, sorting and using materials and sound and hearing.

Literacy
The school implements the National Literacy Strategy. The children are involved in a daily Literacy Lesson lasting for one hour. Students work to develop their reading or writing skills and focus on word or sentence work. Students work with the teacher in small groups for guided reading or work on independent activities in each lesson.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Park Lane International School teachers guide Year 1 students through the following topics: introduction to modelling, using a word bank, information around us, labelling and classifying, representing information graphically, understanding instructions and making things happen.

History
Students at Park Lane International School discover two main topics through the History curriculum. By the end of the year, students will be able to answer the following questions: How are our toys different? What were homes like a long time ago?

Geography
Students at Park Lane International School learn about the following topics in Year 1:
Our Street, Jobs and Leisure Time.

Design and Technology
In Design and Technology, students in Year 1 at Park Lane use hands-on activities to understand moving pictures, playgrounds, the importance of eating more fruit and vegetables.

Art
Park Lane students use art to develop creativity, using a variety of media and techniques in art and craftwork. Students develop an awareness of colour, shape, balance, focus and proportion and use these to convey ideas and feelings in art. The children study a wide range of artists, craftspeople and designers. The topics covered in Year 1 are self-portraits and investigating materials. They also answer the question ‘can buildings speak?’

Music
Students at Park Lane International School study music weekly and are guided through topics such as sounds, duration, pulse and rhythm, pitch, instruments and symbols and timbre, tempo and dynamics. Students love music lessons as they sing, clap and learn to play instruments as well as learn many new songs to sing and perform.

Physical Education
Opportunities are provided to develop skills in dance, gymnastics, athletics, games and outdoor and adventurous activities.

If your child is unfit to participate in such activities, please send along a short note to the child’s teacher or call the school office. Please remember that children who are healthy enough to attend school are considered healthy enough to participate in physical education.
