Maths and Science Fun Days (11 - 13th February 2013)
Year 1 Trip to the Prague Castle
This week Year One wrapped up warm to visit Prague Castle. As we stepped off the bus we saw the guards in their fantastic uniforms, keeping the castle safe. First we visited St. Vittus. The children saw how the sunlight made the colours of the stained glass windows shine and glow. We chose our favourite window and got lots of ideas for when we make one of our own. Next we went to the toy museum to see what games and toys children played with in the past. The children saw that some toys were not so different to those that they play with in 2012. Finally we made a visit to Golden Lane to look at homes from long ago. The classes particularly loved the armoury and the amazing shields and helmets that were displayed there.
Year 1N&1T Assembly
This term, we are focusing on teamwork and have begun by introducing a new ‘Value of the Month’ to all the children. Our very first value is ‘Togetherness’ and the children will be discussing the importance of how working and playing together co-operatively can help to create a happy school environment. Year 1T and 1N introduced the theme to the Key Stage 1 children and staff by presenting a wonderful assembly based on the story of ‘The Gigantic Turnip’. The children performed brilliantly!

Week 8 in Year 1
As part of our literacy this week we have been reading 'Room on the Broom'. The children of 1N and 1T interviewed the Witch who just stopped by to say hello before her busy evening on the day of Halloween. The children were interested to know if she needed money, or where she lived and even if she could turn children into frogs. Of course she could!

Week 6 in Year 1
This week in Year 1T we were making whistles out of straws within our 'senses' investigations. Children were then trying to find out if making them shorter produced a higher note or a lower note.
Week 5 in Year 1
As part of our theme, All About Me, Year 1 B  have been learning all about our bodies, what they can do and how they change and grow. We read the wonderful story, 'Parts' by Tedd Arnold, about a little boy who thinks his body is not working properly and is thoroughly confused as to why his hair and teeth are falling out! We have been ordering and sequencing the book, before creating a story of our own on the 'story mountain'. Doctor Sicily had a visit from each child who complained that a part of their body had a problem, too. She was able to cure them all! The children also loved drawing around each other to create a life size picture of themselves. They then used phonics to label the parts of the body and strengthen their vocabulary.
Week 4 in Year 1
Year 1T have been sequencing the story of 'If you take a mouse to school’. The story tells of a mouse who has adventures when he goes to school. The story helped identify the different areas of the school as a familiar setting.
In the photo’ below the children are ordering the pictures of the story in sequence and then adding key words from the picture. They were using language to communicate with one another,  selecting then decoding letter sounds and blends to find the key word from a word bank.
