The 2017 scholarship scheme for external candidates

The 2017 Park Lane scholarship scheme for external candidates is intended for academically gifted students joining Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11, i.e. students reaching their 13th, 14th or 15th birthdays (respectively) between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018.

The parents of students wishing to apply for Year 10 and Year 11 entry scholarships should take careful note of the procedures outlined below.

For entry to Year 10 and Year 11 (the start of our two-year Cambridge IGCSE programme), applications are invited from the parents of pupils currently registered in Year 9 at other international or English-medium schools. Suitably qualified 8th graders from Czech grammar schools may also apply, provided that these candidates can demonstrate a highly proficient standard of English and a capacity to adapt to the demands of our learner-centred curriculum. Students entering Years 8 and 9 will study the Cambridge Secondary 1 programme for English, Mathematics and Science alongside the English National Curriculum.

The scholarship selection process for 2017-18 will commence on Monday 9th January with an application deadline of Friday 24th March. Suitably qualified applicants will be invited to take part in a two-day process of selection tests and interviews to be held in the week commencing 27th March 2017.

Successful candidates will study for Cambridge IGCSE qualifications in Years 10 and 11, followed by the world-renowned IB Diploma Programme in Years 12 and 13.

Besides having the opportunity to be taught by a dynamic team of highly qualified educators, using a wide range of teaching and learning methods, our scholarship recipients will also be eligible to participate in a range of enrichment opportunities designed to challenge and develop our gifted and talented pupils. They will also enjoy the privilege of studying in a beautiful school campus situated directly beneath the walls of Prague Castle in the historic district of Malá Strana.

Parents are eligible to apply if their child has a strong command of English (written and spoken), together with an excellent school record. Parents should also be willing for their child to be educated in a multi-cultural environment which strongly encourages all pupils to be respectful, resilient, resourceful and responsible risk-takers who understand the value of studying at an international school and see themselves as global citizens.

Applicants will undergo a challenging selection process which tests:
- English proficiency + mathematical and science-oriented abilities;
- logic and reasoning aptitude;
- the applicant’s personal capacity to benefit from Park Lane‘s learner-centred curriculum.

The selection committee, led by the school principal, will assess each applicant‘s school records for the past two years and conduct interviews with the candidate and his/her parents. The committee will also consider a report completed by the applicant’s present head teacher.

Successful candidates for Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 entry will receive scholarship awards based on their educational records (school reports, qualifications/ academic achievements), their performance in the scholarship selection tests, and (where applicable) their families’ financial circumstances. In some instances, scholarships will be awarded to cover the remainder of Key Stage 3 and/or the duration of Key Stage 4 and the IGCSE programme, with the opportunity to qualify for a *further scholarship for the IBDP. All newly enrolled scholarship recipients will be invited to receive framed scholarship certificates at our annual prize-giving ceremony in June.

*N.B. In such cases, scholarships for the IBDP (Year 12-13) will always be based on IGCSE results at the end of Year 11.

Pupils joining Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 will study all subjects in English, plus French or German (including Year 10 if one of these languages is selected for study as part of the IGCSE programme. Czech nationals will attend Czech lessons and complete their national tests at the end of Year 10.
